Four reasons to choose wisdom teeth extraction

One of the most common questions patients ask their oral surgeon is, “Do wisdom teeth have to be removed?” While the answer in many cases is “absolutely,” for some patients the decision to move forward is a choice. So, if wisdom teeth extraction can sometimes be optional, why do 85% of people have them removed?

1. As a preventative measure

While x-rays can give your doctor a good idea of how your wisdom teeth will come in, there is never a guarantee that wisdom teeth will come in straight and without issue. By removing unnecessary third molars before they begin to erupt, patients can avoid any risk of complications.

2. For ease of extraction

Generally, the younger you are when your wisdom teeth are removed, the easier the surgery. This is because as you age, your teeth become more firmly attached to the bone. Younger patients also typically recover faster and experience less postop discomfort than older patients. Choosing wisdom teeth extraction while you are young (late teens to early twenties) will usually make the procedure simpler for your oral surgeon and more comfortable for you.

3. Avoid damage to your other teeth

Wisdom teeth that become impacted or come in at an angle can damage adjacent teeth, lead to misalignment and cause discomfort. Removing your third molars before they begin to push on nearby teeth prevents damage and other health concerns.

4. To resolve pericoronitis

The gum tissue around impacted wisdom teeth is prone to irritation and infection. While an infected wisdom tooth can heal on its own, the only permanent solution to making sure the infection doesn’t return is to remove the impacted tooth.
