Dr. Irene Shuman is a dual-trained specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pediatric Dentistry. A Board-Eligible Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, she is committed to delivering exceptional surgical and dental care to patients of all ages.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Dr. Shuman is a proud first-generation American. Her upbringing instilled strong values of perseverance, compassion, and community. She has had a passion for medicine and wanted to be a doctor for as long as she can remember—even dressing up as a doctor with a stethoscope for Halloween in kindergarten, long before she began dental school!
Dr. Shuman earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from New York University College of Dentistry, where she also received honors in both Pediatric Dentistry and Research. She completed a Pediatric Dentistry residency at Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center and went on to pursue an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the same institution.
In addition to her clinical expertise, Dr. Shuman has a strong background in research, particularly in craniofacial trauma and child dental development. Her work has been recognized at national dental and medical conferences. She also has a background in medical research related to autoimmune conditions such as Sjögren’s syndrome.
Dr. Shuman is deeply committed to giving back to her community. She has volunteered with programs like Give Kids a Smile Day and Special Olympics Special Smiles and has served as a mentor and advocate for children’s oral health throughout her career. She speaks both Russian and Spanish, which helps her connect with families from many different backgrounds.
Dr. Shuman is a proud member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Shuman carries the same sense of care and commitment shaped by her Brooklyn roots to every patient she treats. She provides a full range of surgical treatments including wisdom tooth removal, dental implants, pediatric oral surgery, bone grafting, pathology, outpatient sedation, trauma reconstruction, and cosmetics.
She is known for her warm bedside manner and her ability to help patients feel at ease—whether it’s a child’s first dental procedure or an adult undergoing surgery.
