  • Topic: A Well-Oiled Machine: The Implant Care Team (ICT): A Synergistic Approach to the Dental Implant Patient

Speaker: Melissa A. Obrotka, RDH, BA, ICP

    Date: 10/17/19

Description: Nationally we continue to see the dental implant market grow year after year, and subsequently, in our practices dental implant patients have become more commonplace. Dental implants offer life-altering results to the edentulous patient population, and in the process, a new patient has emerged; the dental implant patient. Although dental implants are made to look and function like natural teeth, dental implant patients require a standard of care different than patients with natural teeth. Comprehensive dental implant care requires an Implant Care Team (ICT). Great ICT’s have advanced training, exceptional communication skills, and deep respect for each other’s role in the long-term success of implant dentistry as well as the overall health of the patient. The best results are achievable when dental professionals practice a team approach to patient-centered care. With each member doing what they do best, the surgeon placing the implants, the restorative dentist restoring them, the dental hygienists screening and maintaining them, the auxiliary staff monitoring their providers and patient’s needs and the office team arranging appointments, finances, and laboratory communications.
Successful outcomes are the direct result of the ICT’s attention to details, knowledge, skills, patient communication, office communication and consistency in how they operate. This program will explore the components of implant dentistry as it pertains to each team member.

Objectives: Upon the completion of this program, the ICT will:
    1. Understand the auxiliary’s role in the delivery of implant dentistry
    2. Establish a baseline of dental implant knowledge for auxiliary team members
    3. Learn how to be a valuable Implant Care Team (ICT) member to serve the population with advanced implant dentistry better
    4. Discuss workflow protocols and procedures specific to each team member
